When it comes to providing high quality foods to hungry customers around the globe, the OSI Group has championed themselves as leaders in the industry. As of 2018, they now provide over 20,000 employees working in 17 different countries around the world. With humble beginnings, the OSI group has skyrocketed in tandem with McDonald’s successes over the years. Here’s the story of how the company started, and how they came to be one of the top companies in the food production industry.
The Roaring 20’s
Otto Kolschowsky, a German-Immigrant who would make his way and living in the windy city of Chicago, Illinois, opened a small butcher shop that would provide fresh meats for his community. His values and friendly customer service would soon build his business into something much more than he could imagine. Over the course of a decade, his company would grow and become Otto & Sons, as his two sons would join him in business. However, the company had no idea what was just around the corner, as the food industry was about to be revolutionized all around the world.
Ray Kroc and McDonald’s
In 1955, Ray Kroc would make history and open the world’s first McDonald’s. What set McDonald’s apart from other restaurants out there was the speedy delivery system. This system was designed to prepare, cook, bag, and serve customers in record times. Nothing like this had been done before, and people drove for miles to witness the McDonald’s experience. However, Kroc would need a steady supplier of fresh ground beef to keep up with now booming demands. Arthur and Harry, Otto Kolschowsky’s sons, had a fateful meeting with Kroc and agreed to supply McDonald’s with fresh ground beef. The three shook hands, and the rest is simply history. As McDonald’s grew, so would Otto & Sons.
To meet booming demands for McDonald’s, Otto & Sons would re-brand themselves as OSI Group, and expand their production efforts to provide McDonald’s with more beef. A production plant specifically built for McDonald’s was built in 1973, and they would soon begin to provide McDonald’s with more beef per demands. As McDonald’s spread across the globe, so did the company’s efforts to help them grow.
OSI Group continues to provide food products for McDonalds, as well as a variety of other restaurants including Burger King, Subway, Papa John’s, Starbucks and more. Ranked #58 on Forbes’ largest private companies in 2016, OSI Group shows no signs of slowing down and continues to pave the way for the food production industry with their inherent values of compassion and fairness of practice.
