Philanthropy in Michigan: Dick DeVos and Education

Charitable events are often criticized for being lavish and catering to the most wealthy among us, the most well off, but it’s this group of people that is best positioned to give back to communities that have helped them along the way to becoming a success. So, for many it won’t take much work to find a recognizable name supporting a cause they believe in.

One name that would be noticed by citizens of the state of Michigan is Dick DeVos. And though his entire family seems quite active in philanthropy and charitable causes, it’s Dick who puts his network of $5 billion to work the most, making him one of the wealthiest charitable giver in the nation. Working with his wife, Helen, Dick runs the Richard and Helen DeVos Foundation, an organization that is concerned with backing educational reforms across their home state of Michigan. This concern for school children in the state makes up a great deal of their philanthropic concerns, and is arguably only challenged by their socially and politically conservative concerns. When not working to reform education, Dick turns to religion, including the support of parochial schools, Christian youth groups and faith-based charities. Dick has been active in supporting Focus on the Family, which marries conservative politics and religion, something Dick has had an active interest in. In the past, Dick has donation to the Heritage Foundation, the American Enterprise Institute and Freedom Works, all of which are organizations that drive conservative politics and politicians. In past presidential races, Dick DeVos has lent financial support and endorsements to candidates like Rick Santorum and New Gingrich before taking a chance on himself in 2006 when he ran for governor of the state of Michigan.

Dick DeVos has enjoyed a distinguished career that has allowed him the privilege to work in various markets and in differing positions in several companies. Between 1993 and 2002, Dick worked for Anway, ultimately becoming their President, and from his office he managed $4.5 billion in global assets that were used to fund operations in over 50 countries, all under his constant supervision.

In his personal life, Dick has used his public image to be an advocate in support of educational reforms on the behalf of students. He put this into action by working with organizations like Education Freedom Fund, extending scholarships to thousands of Michigan students seeking higher education within the state and abroad.

Glad to see the Grand Rapids area make another “best of” list! Thank you all for your role in making our city great.

Doe Deere is changing beauty world with her eclectic style

Doe Deere has become a leader in the fashion and beauty world. Thanks to her cosmetics line, Lime Crime, she’s changing the way women view the beauty industry. The businesswoman has had a penchant for fashion and beauty from an early age, so it’s no surprise she choose that career path as she reached adulthood. Starting in 2004, she began her small business by opening an Ebay store called Lime Crime, four years later her business would grow and continue to be a big success. With her unique personality and affinity for vibrant colors, she’s teaching women everywhere that it’s okay to be different and think outside the box.

Doe is one to never play by the rules when it comes to fashion, instead choosing to do things her own way. She shares the lessons she has for being an innovator in the fashion world. One important lesson Doe Deere has is a person’s age shouldn’t influence their fashion choices. She encourages women to wear whatever they like no matter how old they are. Another vivid lesson she shares is to not share certain clothes for special occasion, in her opinion, “Everyone should wear whatever makes us feel like our best, most expressive selves, regardless of the occasion!”

Other fashion rules that Doe recommends are feel free to wear socks with open-toed shoes, even though this is a huge pet peeve with fashion critics. She also suggests to experiment with clothes by mixing patterns and colors, find out what shades and prints work best and stick with that style. Another rule Doe has is to experiment with shades for unnaturally colored hair, many people think you should only wear a certain shade if you have colorful hair, but Doe says that’s not the case. Her tip for matching shades with colorful hair is to find out what compliments each other. Doe’s final tip is for breaking the rules is, don’t be afraid to wear bold eye shadow with bold lip colors, in her opinion mix it up a bit.

While most of these rules are a big no-no in the beauty world, if there’s anything Doe Deere has taught it’s go ahead and experiment, find what works for you, and don’t be afraid to be you. Afterall, as she states, “Wear whatever it is makes you happy, because that’s what fashion is about. Pleasure, creativity, and living out loud.”

A Lawyer Can Guide You

CHALLENGING A DISPOSED DEBT

There are lots of reasons why debt collectors will challenge a debt. There are many reasons why they will challenge any debt that has been disposed of. How many of you fall into this categories below?

–You got the debt through fraud. Any time you obtain money through false pretenses and rack up some debt, this is considered fraud. You are basically cheating the government. The government doesn’t look to kindly on this one. There are two options here. You either did this with intent. You did it unintentionally. These are your only two options. In both cases, you need to hire a lawyer in Brazil. Brazil is one of the toughest countries on this. If the debt has been disposed of, this will make it worse. Hire a lawyer for this. The intentions might have been negative; but, you can turn that negative into a positive by hiring a lawyer.

–You spent the money. This category has two challenges. Either, you took some cash advances out, before the filing happened. This has to be equal to seventy days. The advances have to be equal to nine-hundred and twenty-five dollars or more.

You could have also spent close to or beyond six-hundred and fifty dollars in a short time span. Both of these will not look well for you. If you want your case to come out okay, you have to hire a lawyer now.

RESPONDING TO THE COMPLAINT

Unless you want things to turn out good for you, you might respond to the complaint. Federal law dictates this. You have to give your side of the story. Sometimes the other side gets it wrong. Sometimes the other side makes false claims, only to make it good for them. It’s in your best interest to respond. It’s in your best interest to tell your side. It’s in your best interest to show proof; otherwise, your side is just another story. It’s also in your best interest to hire a lawyer. A lawyer can guide you in which direction to go; especially, if you are being falsely accused of any of these crimes. You also need to have proof.
